Number 2 to 8 and Attached Area Railings

A terrace of seven houses built in 1814, with later alterations, located on Wellington Parade, Gloucester. The houses are constructed of brick with an ashlar façade, although No. 2 has been painted and part of No. 6’s façade has been replaced with render. They have slate roofs and brick stacks with chimney pots. Designed as a double-depth block with rear wings, the terrace was originally intended to be four houses, similar to No. 2. However, the three houses to the south were later divided into two each.

The houses are three storeys high with basements, railed pavement areas, and a continuous parapet with stone coping. Each of the original houses was planned to be five bays wide, with an identical, blind bay masking the position of each party wall and at the south end, where another house may have been planned. The original doorways are round-arched and feature recessed moulded timber frames with semicircular, “batwing” pattern fanlights above the lintels. The fanlight in the doorway to No. 3 has been replaced with a replica. Ground-floor windows and former window openings, now doorways, are set within round-arched recesses. All have arched sash windows with glazing bars, margin panes, and Gothic glazing in the upper sashes. Nos. 4, 6 and 8 have entrance doorways formed within window openings, with Nos. 6 & 8 having slightly smaller fanlights of a similar pattern to the original. Basement windows are recessed with segmental arched heads and retain sashes with glazing bars, with the exception of alterations. First and second-floor windows have sashes with glazing bars (3x4 panes) in openings with projecting stone sills.

The interiors are largely original, retaining much of the joinery and cornicing. Stone steps bridge the basement areas to the doorway thresholds, with wrought-iron railings and gates featuring turned or twisted finials and iron finials to the main standards. The terrace was completed as now, with Nos 3 to 8 alternating 3-bay and 2-bay houses, with blind windows positioned in front of alternate party walls, and with narrower doors to Nos 6 and 8. An unfinished gable at the south end indicates that a further house had been planned.
