Description
Walnut Cottage is an early 18th century farmhouse with later alterations, situated on Middle Blagdon Road in Paignton. The construction is primarily painted local stone rubble with slate roofs, gabled at the ends. The main block features stacks with rendered shafts, while the service wing has a brick shaft projecting through the roof.
The house follows a two-room plan with a central entrance facing a wide stair. A service wing, possibly a later addition or a former dairy, projects to the front on the left. The front facade is asymmetrical, with two windows visible at the entrance. A plank front door is sheltered by a simple slated pentice supported by a timber bracket. Above the door is a small two-light casement window with two panes per light. The service wing features an internal lateral stack and a large 20th century window. The garden front displays casement windows, including a window illuminating the central stair, and dormer windows have been replaced with windows dating to the 1980s.
An inspection of the interior revealed two-panel and plank doors, and it is likely that other original features remain. The cottage represents a good example of a simple vernacular house from the early 18th century.
