Description

Middle Blagdon Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century, with possible earlier origins. It is constructed from local red breccia rubble, with the side and rear walls rendered, and features a turnerised slate roof that is hipped at the ends. The building has a single-depth layout that is three rooms wide, with an entrance leading into an off-centre passage and a rear stair projection. The arrangement of the passage and the stacks, one on the left and one axial, suggests that there may be an earlier core to the house.

The farmhouse is two storeys tall with an attic and has an asymmetrical six-window front with regular fenestration. It features deep coved eaves and a gabled enclosed porch to the left of centre, topped with a turnerised roof. The porch has a two-leaf 20th-century small-pane outer door and a fine early 19th-century fanlight with floral designs at the intersections of the glazing bars. The internal door includes an overlight with ornamental glazing bars. There are four ground-floor and five first-floor 18th-century or early 19th-century twelve-pane sashes with old glass. To the right of the door, there is a bay with a tripartite sash window, featuring a twelve-pane centre and two over two panes in the outer lights. The attic has two dormers with hipped roofs, each glazed with three over six-pane sashes.

The right side of the building has steps leading up to a service door from the upper farmyard. The rear elevation includes a mix of sashes and casements, as well as a hipped roof stair projection. The interior has been partially inspected and features a good staircase from around 1730, with slender turned balusters and a flat handrail. The joinery includes fielded panelled doors with moulded doorcases. Overall, this farmhouse is of good quality and remains largely unaltered both inside and out. It also has group value with a notably grand double courtyard planned farmyard located at the rear.
