Description
This barn, located approximately 5 metres north-west of Home Farmhouse, is likely from the 18th century and has undergone later alterations. It is constructed of red cob on tall footings of coursed red sandstone rubble, with some rebuilt sections and additions made of red sandstone rubble or weatherboarded timber-framing. The roof features Roman tiles and corrugated iron on the outshuts.
The barn is a lofted structure that faces south-east towards Home Farmhouse. Its north-east end is built into a hillside. There are central opposing doorways leading to the threshing floor, with secondary flooring and outshuts on either side of the doorway. The central front doorway has been modified to include a small diagonal plank door, with a window alongside and a hatch above, all within the original full-height doorway's blocking. To the right is a lean-to stable, and to the left is a former cowhouse that was originally open-fronted with three bays on circular piers but is now blocked with stone rubble. The haylofts of the cowhouse and stable feature a continuous loading platform over the central doorway. The roof is half-hipped at both ends, with the right end having a large loading hatch doorway to the loft from the terrace, and the left end having a small doorway and loading hatch to the loft. The rear wall has been extensively rebuilt with 20th-century concrete blocks.
Inside, the barn has plain carpentry details. It seems that the south-west end was floored before the threshing floor and the north-east end. The roof was replaced in the 20th century. This barn and its associated farm buildings are part of a particularly attractive group of listed buildings in an unspoilt village, adjacent to Cockington Park.
