Description
The Bell Hotel is a 19th-century hostelry located on the west side of High Street in Swindon, built on the site of an earlier inn that is believed to date back to 1515. The building features roughcast over rubble stonework and has a slate roof. It is three stories tall and consists of three bays, with a central entrance and a carriageway through the third bay leading to a rear yard. There is a stack that backs onto the carriageway.
Inside the yard, there are remains of a timber-framed gallery. The entrance is canopied, and there are canted bay windows on the ground and first floors, which have margin glazed sashes. The spandril panels feature carvings. The third-floor windows are four-pane sashes with architraves and bracketed sills that extend as a string course. The building is topped with a paired stone modillion cornice and has a bracketed sign displaying a very large gilded bell. The Bell Hotel is listed for its group value only.
