Description

A house and regional offices of the Royal Veterinary Society, now offices, dating from approximately the mid-19th century with a later 19th-century extension. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with freestone dressings, topped with a slate roof featuring stone coping to the gable ends and ball finials. A truncated stone gable-end stack is also present.

The building's plan comprises an original house from the mid-19th century on the southern side, featuring a side porch, and a late 19th-century extension containing a staircase and principal room on the northern side.

The east front is asymmetrical, with four bays. The original house on the left projects, displaying two gables and later 19th-century two-storey canted stone bay windows with pierced parapets and sash windows without glazing bars. To the right is a set-back range from the late 19th century, featuring a tall three-light stone mullion stair window with four-centred arch lights and a hoodmould, and a large gabled two-storey bay window displaying a carved coat of arms of the Royal Veterinary Society in the gable and sash windows without glazing bars. The southern side includes a large two-storey gabled stone porch with a chamfered four-centred arch doorway and hoodmould. The rear (western) elevation features three gables on the right and a set-back range on the left.

Inside, an open-well staircase boasts turned balusters, turned newels with ball finials. The entrance hall/stairhall features an encaustic tile floor.

This was a purpose-built veterinary surgery and the regional office of the Royal Veterinary Society, formerly occupied by Edward Lawrence, a veterinary surgeon and inspector to Wiltshire County Council. The nearby cattle market was situated to the northwest.
