Description

Lower Coombsend Farmhouse has late medieval origins and was altered in 1654, with recent restoration. The building is constructed of rubble and features a double Roman tiled roof. It has a large central ashlar stack that has been renewed. The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics in two gables, which have coped verges and finials. There are three windows, consisting of 2-, 3-, and 4-light casements with hollow chamfered stone mullions beneath dripmoulds with returns, all set under irregular relieving arches. The 4-light windows on the ground floor are modern.

The farmhouse includes a two-storey gabled projecting porch, which originally served as a service and staircase rear wing. This porch features a 2-light mullioned casement window under a dripmould with returns, and a moulded doorcase with a depressed 4-centred arch carved into the lintel, which was originally a fireplace from the first floor.

Inside, there are remains of four arch-braced collar trusses and several chamfered and ovolo moulded beams with run-out or notch stops. The ground floor east room contains a fireplace with chamfered stone jambs, while the west room features an ashlar surround with double ogee moulding and a 5-centred flat arch, above which are initials and the date G.1654.R.
