Description
Garden Cottage is a former gardener's house located in the kitchen garden to the north of Dodington Park. It dates from the early to mid-19th century and is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and long and short quoins. The roof is plain tiled with raised coped verges and kneelers, featuring stepped stonework under the verges, and stacks that rise from the eaves in a chequered pattern of brick and stone.
The cottage is two storeys high and has two windows on the south front. There is a canted bay to the left with three 20th-century windows and a small window to the right set in a splayed stone reveal. Each of the two small gables has a similar small single-pane window, and there is a small 20th-century window on the ground floor to the right. The parapet wall is raised above the eaves on the right side, and there is a stone plinth.
On the left return, there is a door to the right with a pointed segmental chamfered head, featuring raised fillets and decorative strap hinges. Above this door, in the gable end, is a 2-light casement with a chamfered stone surround. The right return, which is in poor condition due to the demolition of a former outhouse, has a similar door to the left and a similar 2-light casement to the right, with another similar casement in the gable end that retains original leaded diamond lights and margin leading.
At the rear, there is a weathered external stack to the right and another stack rising from the eaves to the left. The central part of the rear has a single-light casement at both the ground and first floors, set in a splayed stone surround, with the first-floor window retaining similar leaded lights. The cottage was noted to be in poor condition at the time of the survey in September 1984.
