Description

The garden ornaments on the terrace south of Dodington House date from the early 19th century and include a pair of sarcophagi, urns, seats, terrace walls, steps, piers, and railings. Made of limestone with cast iron railings, the low wall surrounding the terrace is approximately 35 meters long at the front and returns to the north for about 2 meters. The wall is about one meter high and is divided into sections, each featuring a recessed panel and moulded edge. The central steps lead south, with the wall ramped down at the sides and curving at the bottom.

To the east and west of the terrace, there are pedestals with urns that have fluted bases and round bowls adorned with swags. Attached to the south front of Dodington House, there are stone seats with curved arm-rests. At the outer sides of the terrace, elliptical plinths with recessed panels are topped by stone sarcophagi on moulded pedestals. Each sarcophagus is about 4 meters long and features recessed panels and circles on the sides, all with beaded mouldings and a moulded edge on top.

The terrace walls curve around the sarcophagus plinths, with steps on each side. The western plinth is about one meter high, and the terrace wall continues for about 50 meters to the west. The eastern plinth is about 2 meters high to accommodate the slope of the ground, with steps forming a single flight that meets the terrace wall, which steps down on each side and terminates in a pair of square piers. These piers have plinths, a moulded band course, and flat tops with moulded edges. Attached to the steps on the east side is approximately 40 meters of cast iron fencing in a Regency pattern, consisting of 25 panels with intersecting bars and knob finials, although one panel is missing.
