Description

Mill Farm Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early to mid 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone and has a graduated stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, following a baffle-entry plan with an outshut to the rear right. It features a plinth and quoins.

The central doorway is triangular-headed and has chamfered quoins on the jambs. There are recessed chamfered mullion windows throughout the cottage, including a five-light window to the left of the door, where one mullion has been removed, and a four-light window to the right, which has an inserted door far right. A continuous dripmould runs over the openings, dropping and returning.

On the first floor, there is a two-light window flanked by a three-light window, with some mullions removed. The central ridge stack has been removed, but there is a tabled end stack to the right. The rear of the cottage has a blocked door on the right and a blocked narrow window further right, as well as in the outshut.

On the right return, there is an inserted doorway on both floors, with the upper one blocked, and each has a blocked window to the right. The ground floor features a two-light window with a dripmould, while the first floor has a one-light window.

Inside, the main room on the left has a blocked fireplace with a timber bressumer and chamfered spine beams with stepped run-out stops. The parlour on the right has a small stop-chamfered fireplace with a cambered head and evidence of a former timber partition. The left-hand part of the roof has two king-post trusses, with the left one formerly having a timber partition below. At the time of the last survey, the cottage was in a state of dilapidation.
