Description

The Old Smithy and former Bakehouse/Wash-house is a farmhouse that was used as a smithy in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It dates back to the mid to late 17th century. The building is rendered, with 20th-century tiles on the south side and stone slates on the north.

The south elevation features two storeys and attics with two steep gables. It has three casement windows with two and three lights, some of which have ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds with dripmoulds. There is a gabled central porch with a 20th-century door. To the left is a single storey and attic wing, which was used as the smithy.

On the north elevation, there are two bays with three- and four-light casements. It includes a central gabled, projecting two-storey porch that is now blocked, along with a lean-to on the left. Inside, the building has stop-chamfered beams, a moulded lintel above the parlour fireplace, and a spice cupboard to the left. The roof features extended collar-beam trusses.

Located two yards southeast of the house is a small single-storey bakehouse or wash-house. This structure is rendered with a double Roman tiled roof and has a plank studded door with strap hinges that have fleur-de-lys ends, along with an ogee moulded surround. This door was originally the south door of the house.
