Description
Cromhall War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and has a square plan.
The memorial faces north-east and features a Celtic wheel-head cross. It consists of a single-step base and a two-step plinth, both with a rock-faced finish, leading to a tapering socket stone that has a moulded upper section. A tall shaft rises from the socket stone, tapering in rectangular section to the wheel-head cross head. The north-east face of the socket stone is inscribed with the words: ‘IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO DIED / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919’. The south-east and north-west faces list the names of the 19 men who died in this conflict. The south-west face includes a dedication for the Second World War, reading: ‘ALSO 1939-1945 WAR’, along with the names of those who died in that war.
