Description

The war memorial and grave marker located in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church was erected by the Parnall Aircraft Company, with the designer remaining unknown. It is made of Portland stone, featuring a moulded, upright stone on a moulded base, which rests on a plain base. The structure stands on a platform of local limestone and is flanked by two low-level rectangular planters.

The upright element is topped with a central bronze plaque displaying the emblem of Parnall Aircraft Ltd, along with the dates 1939 – 1945. The upright is rectangular and has a semicircular detail framing the bronze plaque. On the main face, within a raised field, is the inscription: "IN MEMORY OF ALL EMPLOYEES OF PARNALL AIRCRAFT LTD. WHO/LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR AS A RESULT OF AIR RAIDS ON/THE COMPANY’S PREMISES AT YATE." Below this, the date FEBRUARY 27TH 1941 is noted, along with the names of eight individuals interred beneath the memorial.

Additional text states: "ALSO/THREE PERSONS WHO/REMAIN UNIDENTIFIED/*/THE ABOVE WERE LAID/TO REST HERE." The names of 41 others who were killed are also inscribed, with the text above reading: "AND THE FOLLOWING WERE LAID TO REST IN OTHER SANCTUARIES." In the lower right corner of the field is the date MARCH 7TH 1941, followed by the names of three individuals who died on that date. The memorial is situated near the tower of St. Mary’s Church, which is listed as Grade I.
