Description
The war memorial, made of Portland stone, is located on a small green area at the junction of High Street and North Lane, to the north-west of St Mary's Church, which is listed at Grade II*, and the Grade II-listed churchyard gates, along with several other listed buildings nearby. The memorial is designed as a Gothic shrine topped with a cross.
It features a two-stepped base that is square in shape, supporting a tall plinth with two stages and chamfered corners. The middle stage has four panels facing north, south, east, and west, separated by tall splayed blind panels adorned with Gothic ornamentation and gabled heads. Above this is a short octagonal drum with recessed blind panels that have ogee heads on each of the four faces. The entire structure culminates in a tapering spire, which is topped by a small floriated wheel-head cross.
The principal dedicatory inscription on the west-facing panel of the central stage reads: +/ IN PROUD/ AND GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 - 1919/ &/ 1939 - 1945. The north and south panels list 38 names in alphabetical order. The east panel bears the inscription RIP/ 1939 – 1945, followed by eight names also in alphabetical order. The monument is enclosed by two curved stone dwarf walls, with an entrance on the south side.
