Description
The War Memorial Lych Gate, built in 1921 by W.D. Caröe, is a memorial structure made from coarsely dressed local Cotswold stone, with ashlar dressings, stone tiles, and timber. It features a hipped roof covered with stone tiles that has a raised ridge and is topped with a small timber cross. The two arches are constructed from limestone ashlar, and false buttresses with coping tiles are positioned on either side. The vaulted ceiling is made of coarsely dressed stone. Inside, the opposing walls hold stone plaques that honor those who fell in the wars. One plaque commemorates the men of Yate who died in the Great War from 1914 to 1918, listing 32 names, and states that the gate was erected by their fellow parishioners. The other plaque remembers those from Yate who lost their lives in the 1939-1945 war, with 11 names inscribed, and includes a prayer for eternal life through Jesus Christ. The lych gate has timber gates with iron fittings and is integrated into the boundary walls of the Church of St. Mary, which is a Grade I listed building.
