Description

Ridgewood, the former Chipping Sodbury Union Workhouse, is now used as offices for Avon County Social Services. It is believed to have been built between 1835 and 1836 by the architects Scott and Moffatt. The building is constructed from coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings and quoins, topped with slate roofs and features ashlar stacks with cornices. Designed in a Tudor Gothic style, it consists of a front office and service range, along with a rear residential range.

The front range includes a central two-storey gatehouse that is topped with a coped gable and moulded kneelers. It features a four-centred arch and a chamfered doorcase beneath a dripmould, with a single casement window above. Flanking the arch are two single-storey, five-bay wings, with the centre bay slightly advanced, showcasing a coped gable and a three-light cross window. To the left, there are two gabled single-storey rooms, each with two- and three-light cross windows and a projecting gabled centre section.

The rear range is two storeys tall and consists of a pattern of two, five, three, five, and two bays. It features single, two-, and three-light cross windows with chamfered mullions and surrounds. The end bays project as gabled wings with lateral stacks, while the central three bays are slightly advanced, featuring two storeys and attics in gabled dormers with kneelers. There are also two-storey canted bays with parapets, a central 20th-century porch, and plank doors leading to the side wings.
