Description
Thornbury Hospital and Health Centre is a former union workhouse built between 1836 and 1840. The building is constructed from coursed local stone, featuring red brick and ashlar dressings. The roofs are mostly modern tiled, with some areas covered in slate. The front range has tall brick chimney end stacks and gabled central bays, following a cruciform plan. It is two storeys high and has seven windows arranged in a 2:3:2 pattern. The design is symmetrical, with stone quoins and a cill band at the first floor. The entrance features a plain timber door with an overlight and a pediment hood. The windows have gauged red brick heads and brick surrounds, with hornless sashes. There is a blank plaque in the gable. The rear wings are of a similar but coarser design.
Inside, the building has mostly been refurbished, but the front range still retains an open ward with a cast iron fireplace.
