Description

Cherry Orchard Farmhouse, along with its gate piers and forecourt walls, dates to around 1700, although it incorporates older sections. The farmhouse is rendered with a pantile roof extending to the eaves, and has a hipped roof to the left side. Two rendered stacks rise from the ridge, with one diminishing towards the rear. The front features two storeys and four windows, now with later two-light wooden casements. A good semi-circular scallop-shell hood, supported by enriched folded scroll brackets, sits above the square-headed door opening, which has a studded door with vertical battens. A mullion window is located on the ground floor to the rear. A gabled extension to the rear has a steeply pitched roof and a six-panel door, and contains a bread oven. The interior is arranged around a through-passage. It features wide beam chamfers with run-out stops. A south-facing ground floor room has a Tudor arch fireplace with a wooden lintel. The first floor landing includes a few splat balusters on the staircase, with a diaper pattern on the ends of the risers. One door on the first floor has a stop-chamfered surround, and three others are of the moulded plank variety. The garden forecourt is defined by tall, fat, square stone gate piers with moulded stone caps and large ball finials, rubble forecourt walls, some of which include black slag.
