Description
This is an archway with flanking wings, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed from sandstone and limestone rubble with limestone ashlar and brick detailing. The archway is designed in a classical style. The central archway projects forward and features a round-headed arch with a keystone and rusticated voussoirs. It is flanked by two rusticated Roman Doric columns, supporting a triangular open pediment with modillions. A square plinth sits below, featuring a small opening with scrollwork. The rear arch is surrounded by banded sandstone and limestone rubble, with limestone impost blocks and a keystone, and has a plain open pediment on brackets. The upper part of the rear arch mirrors the front.
The two-storey wings each have four windows. The ground floor windows have segmental heads of banded sandstone and limestone rubble, with limestone keystones and cills. The first floor windows are lunettes with similar dressings. A parapet tops the wings, and the window openings are repeated on the rear but are blind.
Inside the archway, there is a quadripartite brick plastered vault. There are two windows on the first floor and a blocked door on each side, all with segmental heads. At the time of survey in June 1984, the archway was in poor condition.
