Description
St. Swithin's Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 17th century, with remodeling and extension around 1840. It is constructed of coursed rubble with stone dressings and features a slate roof with gable stacks. The building has an L-plan layout, standing two storeys high with an attic, and includes three windows, all of which are 4-light casements with 4-centred arched heads set in timber surrounds, complete with relieving arches and drip moulds.
The central porch features a door in a similar surround, flanked by lancet windows. The attic has three dormers with 2-light casements of the same design, and the barge boards are adorned with pierced trefoils, spike finials, and pendants. There is a single-storey wing to the south that has an external gable stack. On the north side, there is a door in a moulded surround, a large 9-light window with leaded lights beneath a relieving arch and drip mould, and a 6-light oriel window supported by five brackets with trefoil heads and roundels in the spandrels. The wooden eaves cornice adds to the overall detail.
The rear wing retains the remains of a possibly reset 4-centred arched window, complete with a hood mould featuring stops. Inside, the farmhouse was originally designed with a through passage plan and includes two 17th-century plank doors with strap hinges. There is also a 19th-century Gothic staircase and a stone fireplace located in the stair hall. The farmhouse is reputed to contain the remains of a medieval chapel on or near the site.
