Description

No. 5 Sutton Wharf is a mid to late 19th-century warehouse located in Plymouth. It is constructed of Plymouth limestone rubble, featuring some dressed quoins and jambs, with brick segmental arches and timber lintels. The building has a slate roof with a coped gable and acroteria at the front. It has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys plus an attic. The front has a two-window range that was originally symmetrical, with a central doorway on each floor that decreases in size. The ground-floor doorway has been widened to the left, and the window to the left of this has been converted into a narrow doorway. There are small round-arched ventilator windows flanking the attic doorway and a hoist above. The original unglazed window with stanchions and internal shutters is on the first floor to the left, while the ground floor to the right has a window with external shutters. Above, there is a two-light casement, and the building features planked doors. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to retain its original floors and roof structure. This warehouse is now one of the least altered in the Barbican and is included for its historical and group value.
