Description
No. 140 Vauxhall Street is a late 19th-century mortuary that has been converted into a shop. It features Plymouth limestone laid in courses with freestone dressings and has a dry slate roof that is hipped on the right. The building has a rectangular plan and is a single storey with a three-bay front, where the central bay is slightly projected and topped with a pediment.
The facade includes a plinth, a transom string, and a parapet entablature that is topped by a turned balustrade and a frieze inscribed with the phrase "DE MORTUIS NIL NISI BONUM." The coped pediment has a central acroterion adorned with acanthus leaves and flanking acroteria featuring turned finials, though the left-hand finial is missing its ball. The central section displays a coat of arms and a large tripartite window with column mullions and carved capitals. To the left, there is a doorway with nook shafts, and to the right, a narrow moulded transomed window.
The interior has not been inspected. The building is noted for its high-quality stone facade and has group value with the former Plymouth Corporation housing to the north.
