Description
Mayflower House is a house built in 1655, although the front was mostly rebuilt in the early 20th century. The ground floor and rear wing are rendered, while the first floor of the front block features slate hanging. The front has a very steep dry slate roof with a polygonal left-hand end and four segmental-headed dormer windows, each with 12-pane, 2-light casements that have thick glazing bars. There are rendered axial stacks with capped louvres and another stack to the rear left of the front range. The rear wing has a lower steep slate roof with a hip. The building has an L-shaped plan, likely reconstructed to reflect the original style. It is two storeys plus an attic, with a five-window range on the front featuring hornless sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor has two windows, with the center being a recessed and bowed shop window, and a doorway on the left. The left-hand return is canted and has a canted bay window on the first floor, with triple sashes and a pair of sashes in the wing beyond. A stone plaque inscribed "John Hawker Merchant 1787" is located on the front left. The interior has not been inspected.
