Villa in planned group. 1827 by John Foulston. Stucco with stucco detail and slatehanging to part of right-hand return; bitumen-grouted slate hipped roof with projecting eaves; 4 x 2-stage rendered end stacks. Double-depth plan with large saloon to front and entrance hall behind left-hand part. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3-window-range forecourt front and symmetrical 3-window entrance front to left-hand return. Corner pilasters with incised Greek key. Forecourt front has 3-bay wrought-iron balcony with spandrels and curvilinear detail to 1st floor carried on paired brackets; 2-pane sashes. Entrance front has central tripartite window with moulded hood on paired pilasters; original hornless sashes with glazing bars; the sidelights are painted over as are the other sashes of this elevation. Central porch of vermiculated rusticated stucco and moulded entablature with modillion cornice; pair of glazed and panelled doors to right-hand side of porch (facing the road). INTERIOR: virtually complete interior with some very fine features including: ornate plaster ceiling to saloon; panelled shutters, panelled doors within moulded architraves; open-well staircase with open string and stick balusters; old sink in scullery and late C19 cast-iron range in basement. Forecourt railings are included as a separate item. One of the best-preserved villas in this fine group by Foulston. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 673).
