Description

Langford House is a former country house, now serving as the Bristol University Veterinary School. It was built around 1860, with a southwest addition from 1913 and a further northeast addition that includes a belvedere tower. The building features colourwashed render with dressed stone openings, exposed dressed sandstone on the tower, and concealed slate roofs, all designed in the Italianate style.

The east entrance front has three bays, with a slightly advanced central section topped by a pediment. Rusticated pilasters frame the ends and define the central bay. The tall window openings are adorned with shouldered and eared architraves and keystones, featuring plate glass sashes. The central upper window has a round-headed surround with a female head keystone. A central projecting early 20th-century part-glazed porch adds to the entrance. Other decorative elements include moulded string courses, a dentil eaves cornice, and a blind parapet with open balustraded sections. The pediment displays Sidney Hill's coat of arms, and ornamental vases are placed on the parapet.

The southwest wing shares similar architectural features, while the northeast wing showcases a Jacobean-style parapet and a hipped roof with ironwork fret at the ridge. The belvedere tower consists of four stages, featuring a Jacobean-style round-arched viewing stage, a bracketed eaves cornice, and a strapwork parapet, along with a cast iron staircase. Inside, the circa 1860 staircase is notable for its cast iron balusters and glazed circular lunette, while the remainder of the interior was remodelled in 1913 at the expense of Sidney Hill.
