Description

Hylsbroke is a detached house, dating to around 1820, and now divided into two separate properties. The main part of the house is a two-story, three-bay structure with a lower, two-story, five-bay service wing attached. The north front has twelve-pane sash windows set in splayed surrounds. The central section is slightly projected and features a doorway with a reeded, segmental-headed architrave, a six-panel, two-leaf door, and a segmental patterned fanlight above. A projecting Ionic semi-circular porch has a deep entablature and dentil frieze. A plaster plaque with decorative swags is positioned above the central upper window. The eaves cornice is broken to resemble a pediment over the centrepiece. The south front has a nine-bay lean-to ironwork verandah with pointed Gothic openings and scrolled piers. Tall ground floor French windows have marginal glazing. The service wing has a mix of sash windows and a two-story, pyramidal-roofed tower on the south corner. Inside, notable features from around 1820 remain, including a staircase with cast iron balusters depicting lion masks and floral sprays, reeded architraves with paterae roundels to doorways, doors with octagonal panels, anthemion and acanthus frieze cornices, and a marble chimney piece in the ground floor right-hand room.
