Description
Alden House is a detached house dating to around 1820, with additions made in the later 19th century. The main house is colourwashed and has a slate roof, while the additions feature pantiles and 20th-century plain tiles. It has two storeys and a two-window south front. The ground floor windows are 16-pane sashes set in shallow round-headed recesses; the upper floor windows are 9-pane sashes. A lean-to addition on the left-hand side contains the staircase and features a doorway with a flat hood over a six-panel door, with a blind semi-circular lunette above. A similar addition on the right-hand side includes a 20th-century glazed covered area projecting to align with the main facade. The house has a deeply projecting eaves cornice with geometric patterning on the soffit, a double-span roof, and end brick stacks. Inside, the staircase addition on the left-hand side contains a fine early-19th century staircase with a ramped mahogany handrail and reeded balusters. The stairwell at ground floor level has several arched entrances leading to the reception rooms. The house was previously known as Mendip View.
