Description
Maysmead Place is a detached house, likely dating from the late 17th century, with alterations and additions from the early and late 19th century. It features colourwashed render and slate roofs. The building has a 17th-century cottage at the rear and 19th-century additions to the south and rear, creating a 'U-shaped' plan. The south front includes an early 19th-century range that is two storeys high with three windows, alongside a two-storey gable end from a late 19th-century addition. The windows are early 19th-century small pane casements with Gothick Y tracery glazing set under pointed-arched heads, while those in the late 19th-century section are faithful reproductions. There is a central canted porch that rises through two storeys in the early 19th-century range, open at the base and supported by two columns. The upper window in the bay is sashed, and there is a six-panel door. The roof is shallow pitched with deeply projecting eaves and two ridge-rendered stacks. Inside, there are several six-panel doors with reeded architraves, an early 19th-century staircase featuring a wreathed mahogany handrail, square balusters, and carved tread ends. The house was originally known as Blackmoor Cottage.
