Description
The Master Gunner's House, also known as The White House, is a mid-18th century building located in Hugh Town, St. Mary's. It is constructed of rendered granite and features a gabled slate roof with rendered end stacks. The house has a two-room central-entry plan, a rear outshut, and an additional range at the back. It stands two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window façade.
A mid-20th century stone porch with doors on the sides, an architrave surround, and a pedimented glazed centre leads to a six-panelled raised and fielded door with a three-pane overlight. The windows are late 19th century horned sashes with two panes over two panes. At the rear, there is a rocket house that projects at right angles, featuring a gable-end door and an angle ventilation hole. The cost of constructing this house was recorded as £128 8s 4d, and it is depicted on Shaw's map from 1744. The interior has not been inspected.
