Description
The White House is a house, originally built in 1747, but significantly altered from the early to mid-19th century, with later additions and changes. It is constructed of red brick with a stuccoed front, and has a slate roof with projecting verges and carved double-purlin ends. The building has an integral end stack, and follows a T-shaped plan. It is three storeys high, with a top storey added in the 19th century; rusticated angle quoins with banded rustication to the ground floor, and a moulded plinth and band to the first floor. There are three windows to the front, with glazing bar sashes having slightly cambered heads and 16 panes to the ground and first floors. A plain Doric porch with a stone balcony fronts the central entrance, leading to a 19th-century half-glazed door. A date stone marked “RWD/1747” is located to the right gable end.
A lower red brick range is attached to the right, featuring an open-pedimented gable end above two blind windows, with a 20th-century shop front below. A glazing bar sash window with a slightly cambered head is present on the first floor. A low service range, constructed of red sandstone blocks with a corrugated iron roof and moulded eaves cornice, extends at a right angle to the rear of the main building. A red brick lean-to is located to the left gable end, concealed behind a wall with ramped stone coping. Two sets of stone gate piers, linked by spear-headed railings on a low brick wall, stand at the front. The property is included on the list for its group value.
