Description
The Powder Magazine and blast walls, located at The Garrison in Hugh Town, date back to the early 17th century. Constructed from coursed granite blocks, the building features a steeply-pitched scantled slate roof with a roll-moulded stone ridge and has a rectangular plan. The magazine and blast walls include a segmental-arched entry and ventilation ports. Inside, there is a vaulted stone roof. This structure was built shortly after 1601 as part of Francis Godolphin's plans to fortify the area. It is a rare example of its type and an important part of the late 16th and early 17th-century fortifications centered around Star Castle. The site is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
