Description
North Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 17th to 18th century, which was extended and remodeled in the 19th century. It is constructed of roughly coursed granite rubble and features a slate roof that is hipped to the left, with rendered ridge and end stacks. Originally a two-unit dwelling, the farmhouse has had its end stacks extended to the sides and rear in the 19th century. The extensions include a parlour wing to the rear left, a kitchen to the rear right, and a back kitchen, packing shed, and glasshouse to the right.
The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range. It features granite lintels over horned 2/2-pane sash windows, including two blocked doorways from the original structure, and a gabled porch to the left. The interior includes 19th-century features such as beaded joists, panelling, and cast-iron fireplaces. There is a dairy door with ventilation holes to the left, and the rear left room has a moulded fireplace with a pulvinated frieze and decorative surround. The front room contains a mid-19th-century iron Cornish range with a decorative surround and a bracketed wood overmantle, along with a 19th-century cupboard in a recess and another fireplace in a dark hardwood surround, reputedly from the captain's cabin of a wrecked ship. North Farmhouse is a notable example of a Scillonian house with an evolved house plan, contributing to an interesting farmstead.
