Description
The Church of St Martin's is a church built in 1866 for Augustus Smith. It is constructed of roughly coursed granite rubble and features a gabled slate roof. The church has a rectangular single-cell plan with a west porch. The east gable includes a cross at the coping and a segmental-arched window. The side walls have three bays with 20th-century windows located under the eaves. The west gable is topped by a bellcote that displays the monogram A.S. and the date 1866. Above the gabled porch, there are two windows with granite lintels, flanked by mid-20th-century extensions. On the east wall, there is a socketed base of a small medieval cross.
Inside, the church features a decorative encaustic tile sanctuary floor, 19th-century pine benches, a Gothic-style pulpit, and an octagonal font. There is a west gallery with reset turned balusters, and the east window depicts St. Martin and the Beggar, created by Clayton and Bell.
