Description
Watermill Cottage is a house dating from the 18th century, with extensions added to the left in the late 18th or early 19th century and to the right around 1832. The older part on the left is built from roughly coursed granite, while the 1832 extension features coursed roughly-dressed granite. The roofs are gabled with scantled slate and slate, and there are rendered stacks on the left end and granite stacks on the 1832 range.
The 1832 section has a double-depth central-entry plan and is symmetrical with a three-window range, featuring granite lintels above a door from the 1980s and four-pane sashes that replaced the original six-over-six pane sashes. The two-window range on the left, dating from the 18th century, includes a mid to late 19th-century twelve-pane horizontally-sliding sash in a blocked doorway and a blocked 18th-century window next to a mid-20th-century window on the first floor. The extension further to the left has granite lintels over a 20th-century door, mid-20th-century ground-floor windows, and a 19th-century four-pane centre-hung casement. There is a rear outshut.
Inside, there are mid-19th-century panelled doors and a mid-19th-century panelled staircase on the right. Watermill Cottage is a notable example of a multi-period Scillonian house, with the extension to the right believed by the owner to date to 1832.
