Description

The Brick House is a house dating from the late 18th century, with extensions or partial rebuilding from the mid-19th century, along with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick on a sandstone plinth for the two left bays and on a brick plinth for the right bay. The roof is made of graded slate, featuring a stack behind the ridge on the right and an integral end stack on the left. The building has an L-plan layout, with a wide gabled range at right angles to the rear on the left and the right bay of the main range, which may be a mid-19th century extension or a rebuilding of an earlier bay.

The house has three storeys and a plastered moulded eaves cornice. The front has three windows, featuring glazing bar sashes with 16 panes on the ground floor. The windows have segmental heads that have been altered to form gauged wedge lintels, with the second floor windows having reduced proportions and fluted keystones on the stone lintels of the left and centre bays. The central entrance has a plain open-pedimented pilastered doorcase with a semi-circular fanlight, panelled reveals, and a 20th-century panelled door. The back wall of the 18th-century part has a light timber frame with horizontal panels, and a possible earlier wall-plate is visible.

The wide gabled range at the rear, which has an integral end stack, appears to be contemporary with the two left bays of the front, as it is bonded to them, but it cuts across a blocked window, indicating it must be a later addition. Inside, there is a late 18th-century staircase immediately behind the entrance, featuring carved newel posts and stick balusters, along with 18th and 19th-century panelled doors.
