Description
The barn to the west of Tamarisk Farmhouse is a mid-19th century combination barn, as shown on the 1880 Ordnance Survey map. It is constructed of uncoursed stone rubble with dressed quoins and lintels, topped by a gabled pantile roof. The barn has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys tall.
The east front faces the farmhouse and a former yard, featuring stone lintels over outer 20th-century doors. Steps lead up to a central doorway, which is flanked by two 20th-century windows, all positioned under the eaves. There are stone lintels above loft openings on each gable end, as well as a first-floor door at the rear that was originally a winnowing door. A later 19th-century outshut is located at the north end of the barn. Inside, there are 19th-century collar trusses. This barn is a good example of a Scillonian farm building, using materials typical of the 19th century and reflecting a plan that became increasingly common on Cornish farms during that time.
