Description
This is a detached building located 10 metres south-east of Clifton House, originally of uncertain use but now serving as a library. It dates from the mid-16th century and formerly extended further north. The structure features dressed stone walls with Ham stone dressings and a clay-tile roof topped with stone gable copings. A stone stack with a moulded cornice is present on the south-east gable. The building has two storeys and cellars.
On the north face, remnants of two walls that once projected north can be seen. The windows are two-light stone mullions with four-centred arches set in square heads, though they are not aligned vertically. There is a doorway with a four-centred head, and the plank door displays a pattern of recess quatrefoils within circles, along with strap hinges from the 16th century.
The north-west corner features a projecting stair turret, which has two-light mullion windows on each side. This turret is accessed by a doorway with a four-centred head on the east face, leading to another plank door with long strap hinges, dating from the 16th or 17th century. The west elevation includes a single-light window on the first floor and a stack embrasure to its right at the same level. The south elevation has a four-light stone mullion window on the ground floor, a two-light stone mullion window, and two additional two-light windows in the gable end to the east.
