Description
The Black Bull Public House is a mid to late 17th-century building located on the north side of Market Street in Whittlesey. It is constructed of rubblestone with dressed stone around the window openings and other details, set on a stone plinth. The building features a steeply pitched roof, which is currently covered in concrete tiles, and has original coved eaves made of plaster with a roll moulding along the lower edge.
The original end stack is made of stone ashlar and has recessed panels on the sides, topped with an entablature and resting on a square base with a splayed upper edge. There is a right-hand end stack made of brick that dates from the 19th century. The building stands two storeys high with an attic and includes three gable dormers added in the 20th century. A moulded stone band separates the two storeys.
On the first floor, there are four casement windows with original stone surrounds and ovolo mullions, along with a single light window that has similar moulding. The three ground floor window openings were enlarged in the 19th century, although the left-hand window appears to retain parts of its original surround. The original pedimented doorway at the left end has been removed. There is one original blocked window in the rear wall at first floor level, while the rest of the wall is obscured by later additions.
Inside, the ground floor rooms have undergone significant alterations but still feature stop-chamfered main beams. Access to the first floor was not available for inspection.
