Description
This is a railway bridge built around 1860, located over a tributary of the River Yeo. It features square stone, possibly from Chilmark, with the interior face of the arch made of red brickwork. The bridge has a semi-circular arch with a stepped extrados and a keystone that is dressed proud. There is an impost course between battered and raked pilasters, and elliptical raked abutments. A moulded quasi-parapet completes the design. The bridge rises only half the height of the railway embankment, and the river channel is set square to the railway. This bridge is a carefully detailed and well-considered companion to the nearby rail/road bridge for the London and South Western Railway, which also opened in 1860.
