Description

Forge Cottage is a 17th-century cottage with 18th-century window replacements, located at the junction with Duck Street in Cerne Abbas. It is attached at right angles to a former school house. The cottage has rubble stone walls, which are rendered and painted cream, and a thatched roof with decorative block ridging. A brick stack rises from the ridge, slightly left of centre, and another from the junction of the two ranges. The cottage is two storeys high with three sashes, featuring glazing bars within flush wooden frames. The front door is located right of centre and has four fielded panels and two top lights. Above the door is a bracketed open wood pediment with a dentil cornice, which dates to the 19th century. The pediment’s architrave has been cut away, suggesting it may be a reused element. A datestone from 1792 is visible on the rear of the cottage, which faces Mill Lane. This rear elevation is constructed from the same materials as the front but is unrendered. It has two storeys and two windows with three-light cast-iron casements, featuring glazing bars and wooden lintels. Two plank doors are located towards the left-hand end of this rear elevation.
