Description
The Firth Monument is a chest tomb located approximately 6 meters east of the Church of St Nicholas in Weymouth. It is enclosed by cast-iron railings and is situated next to the churchyard wall along Dorchester Road. The monument is made of Portland stone and commemorates Lieutenant Firth of the 70th Foot, who died in 1828. This simple Regency chest features an ovolo-mould edge on the ledger slab, fluted pilasters at the corners, and a raised oval inscription panel with sunk tympana that includes carved fans. The chest is surrounded by a low railing designed in a Gothic style, which has pinnacled standards set on a weathered stone plinth. Although the railings are badly rusted, they remain complete.
