Description

The George Hotel is a hotel that was formerly a coaching inn, dating from the 17th century, with elements from the 18th century and a roof core from the 16th century. It features stone walls that are rendered and a slate roof with gable ends. The building has four stacks, three of which are made of brick and one that is rendered. Two stacks are located on the ridge, one at the left-hand gable and the other towards the right-hand end, while the remaining two are near the front wall eaves. The hotel is two storeys high and has six windows; two of these are stone mullioned with four lights and ovolo-moulds, located on the left-hand side at both the ground and first floors. The other windows are wooden sashes with glazing bars, including two tripartite windows towards the right-hand end. There is a projecting porch and a canted bay window above in the second bay. The wooden porch has lateral benches and a weather-boarded bay with sashes, topped with a pyramidal slate roof. An entrance to the former coaching yard is situated at the right-hand end.

Inside, on the ground floor to the left, there is an open fireplace with straight-chamfered stone jambs and a straight-chamfered wooden lintel, which dates from the 17th century or earlier. The interior also features mid-chamfered beams with tongue stops. Upstairs, similar mid-chamfered beams can be found, and accommodation is arranged in small rooms off a corridor along the back wall. The doors are low and small, likely a conversion from the 18th century. Evidence of former cruck construction is visible, with two trusses that probably date from the 16th century.
