Description

The George Hotel is a coaching inn, now functioning as a hotel, likely dating from the mid-16th century with later alterations and extensions. The building features roughcast, probably over brick on the ground floor, and roughcast on timber framing on the first floor. It has a massive brick stack at the right end and various brick stacks at the rear. The layout is courtyard-style, with two stories and a five-window range. There are double gates with open slatted tops leading to the carriageway in the center. The ground floor has 16-pane unhorned sash windows, except for a tripartite sash with glazing bars on the left. The first floor has a jetty and 16-pane unhorned sashes with wood architrave surrounds on both sides. A gabled dormer with a two-light casement is located in the center, flanked by cross-gables on the left and right. The rear shows some visible timber framing and has irregular fenestration. Inside, there is extensive beaming and a massive brick open fireplace with a brick basket arch on the left side of the ground floor. To the right, there is a subsidiary 18th-century addition, also roughcast, probably on brick, with an old plain-tile roof. This addition is two stories with an attic and a three-window range, featuring a sash door to the left of center and 16-pane horned sashes in all openings, except for a 28-pane horned sash on the ground floor left and gabled dormers on the right.
