Description

Boyle's Old School is a former school building, founded by Robert Boyle in 1691 and constructed in 1697. It is now partially used as a photographic studio. The building features rubble stone walls and a tiled roof with coped gables, along with one brick and one plastered chimney stack. It has an L-shaped plan with a rear wing, where the main range is two storeys high and the rear wing is single-storey.

On the street front, there is a blocked doorway with a four-centred arch and a stone panel above it with a moulded surround. The ground floor has two tall stone mullioned and transomed windows with casements that include a centre horizontal bar, both under hoodmoulds. The first floor features three stone mullioned windows, also under hoodmoulds, with similar casements. The entrance is located in the right end wall, accessed through a 20th-century flat-roofed porch. The rear wing has a slate roof and one ashlar chimney stack, along with two mullioned and transomed windows that have casements with a centre horizontal bar. It is noted that the left-hand section of the ground floor of the front range and the entire first floor are now part of School House.
