Description
Melplash School is a former school building, now converted into a house, dating from 1849. It features rubble stone walls with ashlar dressings and steep slate roofs. The stone gable copings have roll-moulded tops, and there are level kneelers with ogee-moulded soffits. A modillion eaves cornice is present, and the building has a cross-wing facing the road. It is one and a half storeys tall, with a side range of four to five windows, which include two-light cross-transomed ovolo-mullions topped with straight labels. The front wall facing the road has a projecting half-dormer that extends down to the ground, featuring a three-light window that is stepped up at the center, also with a label. A stone tablet inscribed with 'Melplash School' is located here. There is a porch doorway on the side wall, which has moulded jambs and a four-centred head with a returned label above. The door is a two-leaf plank-and-muntin style from the 19th century. The west wall contains a large five-light mullion-and-transom window with a returned label above it. Inside, the school-room has a hammer-beam roof with arch-braces to the collar and queen-struts above.
