GV II

Wide frontage house, formerly 2, at corner with Wesley Street. c1840/1850. Flemish bond brickwork, hipped slate roof. 2 storeys, attic, and part basement. To Commercial Road in 4 windows, all glazing-bar sashes, to splayed brick heads and stone sills. 2 sash flat-roofed dormers. The outer bays at first floor have good 8:12:8-pane oriels with dentil frieze and moulded cornices, flanking 12-pane sashes. At ground floor are three 12-pane with an arched doorway with stone imposts, and a painted-over fanlight in bay 2, and a C20 door inserted in a square opening between bays 3 & 4. Under bay 1 is just visible part of a segmental arch, presumably to a cellar. A slight stone plinth, mainly covered by the pavement, a mid plat band, stone ovolo-mould cornice carried round the oriels, a blocking course and coped parapet. The return, which continues as Nos 15 & 16 Wesley Street (qv), has a flat-roofed dormer above a 12-pane sash at each level (that to ground floor without bars in the lower sash), and a C20 door in arched opening detailed as to Commercial Road. All other detail returns from this main front. INTERIOR: not inspected.
