Description

No. 40 High Street is a house and outbuildings that have been converted into a shop and flats. It dates from the 18th century, with an early 19th-century rear wing and a shopfront from the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of red brick, with some grey bricks, in Flemish bond. The front block has a steep pitched roof that is now slated, while the rear wing has slated roofs that are hipped at the west ends.

This two-storey, L-shaped corner building faces east and features a long rear extension that runs parallel to Wesley Road to the south. The east front has a deep moulded timber band under the eaves, a single sash window on the first floor with a flush box and 6/6 panes, and a shopfront with pilasters that have incised linear decoration. The shopfront also includes an entablature with dentils below the frieze, a three-light window with a plastered stallriser, and a half-glazed moulded panelled door with margin-lights.

At the southwest angle, there is a short hipped two-storey rear wing with a 20th-century porch. There is a straight joint at the set-back two-storey outbuilding, which features five recessed sash windows with plastered reveals, flat arches, and 8/8 panes on the first floor, along with two taller similar windows on the ground floor.
