Description

This is a house dating to approximately 1840, located on the south side of Albert Street, Markyate. The house is constructed of plum brick with lighter red brick dressings, a low stucco plinth, and a slate roof. It is a symmetrical, two-storey and cellar street house facing north, with two windows per floor. A round-headed plastered recess is located on the first floor above the central doorway. The windows are recessed sash windows with 8/8 panes, plastered reveals, and flat gauged red brick arches. The windows have red brick jambs and quoins. The main entrance features a four-panel flush-beaded door with a stone step and a wooden doorcase incorporating tall reeded uprights, a head with corner blocks, and paterae, topped with a flat moulded hood. A side passage at the western end of the front features a four-panel flush-beaded door and boarding above, set under a three-centred arch. The design is refined and has undergone few alterations.
