Description
The Forge is a former blacksmith's cottage and forge located on the north side of The Common in Evershot. It has a late 16th century core, with 19th century rebuilding and extension, along with 20th century renovations. The building features rubble-stone and rendered walls that are painted, with rebuilt brick stacks at the main gable ends. The roofs are slate, hipped on the left side and gabled on the right. The structure is two storeys high and has three windows, which are three-light wood casements with horizontal glazing bars. The former forge is at the left end, featuring two openings with segmental arches above. There is a porch at the centre of the cottage, which is rendered and painted, with a pitched slate roof and a plank door that has one glass light, designed in a traditional style from the 20th century.
Inside, the fireplace at the south end of the original cottage has a relict bressumer and mortices for a timber firehood, along with remnants of wattle-and-daub fill. The remains of the firehood are visible at the first floor level. The interior also includes two cruck-trusses and a heavy (4-inch) chamfered ceiling beam that runs north-south across the hall.
