Description

The stables, located approximately 30 meters west of Stepleton House, date from the mid-18th century and are likely the work of Thomas Fownes. The building is constructed of brick, featuring a central bay in header bond and outer bays in Flemish bond. It has a hipped roof that is partly tiled and partly covered with stone slates. The structure is symmetrical, single-storey with lofts, and consists of seven bays arranged in a 3:1:3 pattern.

Notable architectural features include rusticated ashlar end pilasters, a moulded cornice, and round-headed sash windows set under brick arches with stone keystones and impost blocks. The central entrance has a double fielded panel door with a fanlight above, framed by a rusticated ashlar surround. Above this is a dentilled pediment, which contains an ashlar lunette window with a keystone. The central bay is topped with a wooden clock turret and bell-cote featuring an ogival cupola. To the right of the center, there is an inserted dormer attic window. The interior has not been fully inspected, but it appears to contain some early fittings.
